Food on Film: Community-led filmmaking on Bradford food sustainability

A community farm with raised beds for planting. The man and children in the image are looking at one of the beds.

How can we talk about food, health, and sustainability in a meaningful way? What tools do we need and who needs to be part of these conversations? This project, led by Rory Padfield (Earth and Environment) and in collaboration with Alexandra Dales (York St John University) aims to answer these questions as part of a pilot study in partnership with Bradford Council. They are collaborating with five community organisations: Horton Community FarmInn ChurchesFeeding Bradford and KeighleyCatholic Care and Eden Community Association.  These five organisations are involved in various food sustainability related activities in Bradford, such as community garden and planting initiatives, food banks and food purchasing voucher schemes to support vulnerable communities.

Food and other items in a community social food hub. Two women in conversation, one is talking on a mobile phone.

The project will lead to five co-created community-led films on food sustainability in Bradford, using the Critical Sustainability Stories (CRiSS) Tool, developed as part of an earlier AHRC funded project. The CriSS tool supports storytellers curate research-informed stories about sustainability and climate change.
The project will include working with Bradford community groups, training on participatory filmmaking and training on how to use the CRiSS tool to enable effective storytelling on food sustainability issues.
