Title: “Threads: Comics Storytelling, Activism, and the Refugee Crisis”
Description: Graphic novelist Kate Evans discusses her groundbreaking non-fiction graphic work Threads from the Refugee Crisis (Verso, 2017) in conversation with Harriet Earle. She explores the comic's use of lace as a recurring motif, which aids readers in empathising with the stories it tells while critiquing European colonialism, postcolonial foreign policy, and violence. This event combines sequential art and geopolitics, gender, class, and migration research, delving into the challenges and possibilities of representing the unrepresentable in comics. Kate Evans shares her creative and narrative choices in crafting the comic, offering insights into her experiences in 'The Jungle,' while academic and comics theorist Harriet Earle examines how readers interpret the book within the broader context of comics, migration, and trauma.
