Accessing museum collections can be hugely beneficial to research and museum practice. That’s why over the last 4 years, The Cultural Institute have partnered with  Leeds Museums and Galleries to launch a co-funded research grant scheme, supporting academics from any discipline and museum curators to work together and explore Leeds Museum and Galleries' nationally-recognised collections.

Academics from a variety of disciplines – including Mechanical Engineering, Music, Civil Engineering and Philosophy – have previously been awarded the fund and have benefited immensely. Benefits to academics include:

  • opportunity to access objects from the city’s collections of over 1.3 million items
  • opportunity to make connections between objects in the collections and your research
  • collaborating with specialist curators
  • opportunity to engage wider public with research
  • opportunity to engage in an interdisciplinary way.

Previous funded projects have included using industrial archives to investigate the historical context for current infrastructure decision-making; using light microscopy for new insights into décor collections of stately homes; and engaging the public in debates around musical objects before they go on display in an upcoming exhibition. Please click here if you wish to find out more on eligibility, deadlines and previous projects.

Interested academics are invited to join our online session on 26th January to hear from Dr Sepideh Khodaparast, previous awardee of the fund, and a chance to meet the curators, and hear about their collections. Please click here to register.  Applications to apply will open shortly after the online session, with a closing deadline of 7/3/2022.

After this, academics are to jointly apply to the fund with their chosen curator.
