Chi Xie

I completed my PhD from the School of English, University of Leeds, under the supervision of Dr Richard Brown and Dr Sarah Dodd. My PhD thesis entitled ‘The Adaptation of James Joyce and Ulysses in the Hong Kong Novel Jiutu by Liu Yichang: The Comparative Adaptative Approach’ is the first full-length comparative literary study of James Joyce and Liu Yichang.  

I am now working on turning this thesis into a monograph, which seeks to enrich existing literary criticism on Joyce and Liu while revealing potential relations between European modernist, Chinese classical, and Hong Kong modernist literature. The monograph aims to introduce a promising research approach for the comparative study of modernist literature between Hong Kong and the West. I call a ‘Comparative Adaptative Approach’.
