Visual Cultures of Ecology (VCE)
Overview
This group brings together researchers who are working in response to environmental crisis, alert to calls for epistemic change to recentre ‘who and what the humanities has chosen to overlook in its stories of the earth’ (Yusoff). It aims to foster research dialogue and community at Leeds, and beyond, around new work and research aims in interdisciplinary fields including extinction studies, eco-marxism, eco-poetics, eco-theology, new materialism, animal studies and plant humanities. In the year 2025-6 it intends to work with the lens of Plant Humanities and engage with partners including Kew Gardens kew.org and Stavanger’s ‘The Greenhouse’ The Greenhouse | University of Stavanger. Hosted by the school of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, the group will foreground the ‘art and visual cultures of ecology’ as eco-critical resources and as stimuli for multi-disciplinary conversations.
